My name is Sally Lowe and my students call me “Mao Laoshi” (Mao is my maiden name in Chinese; Laoshi means “teacher” in Chinese). It's my great pleasure to be your child's Kindergarten Mandarin Immersion teacher.
I am originally from China, where I completed my K - 12 education as well as college education. I came to the US in 1990 and obtained my second Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and my Master's Degree in Linguistics with an emphasis in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have been teaching language programs in the public schools since 1995. I taught English as a Second Language for the first 5 years of my teaching career and have been teaching Chinese Immersion since 2000.
In 2007 I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to help establish the Mandarin Chinese Program for Barnard. I have witnessed the amazing changes and growth of the program since the day I joined Barnard staff. I feel blessed working in a school, where diversity is embraced and where parents show tremendous support for their child and teachers. As for me, helping my students acquire the Chinese language and watching them grow are my greatest joy of the day!
